Rafael Solís Español

Born in Cuba 455 years after the arrival of Chritophorus Columbus, Rafael F. Solís, like any more or less famous photographer (in this case much less famous), also remembers very well his first camera. In his case it was the popular Brownie, a model made by Kodak around… ok around that year. Upon fleeing his native Cuba in 1984 (pure Orwellian coincidence), he spent three unforgettable months in Newfoundland, a photographic paradise for sea lovers. Since April 1984, he lives in Ottawa.

Mostly a self-taught photographer, Rafael has taken numerous courses and has attended numberless seminars in Havana, St. John's, Ottawa and Palm Beach. In Cuba he had the privilege to attend seminars given by Roberto Rodríguez, a legend in Cuban photography. More recently, he has attended Master Classes by big names in today's photography like Arnold Newman, Nachtwey and Freeman Patterson, among others.

This award-winning photographer has published his works in Cuba, Canadá and Spain. His photographs can also be found in private collections in Canada, United States, Spain, Germany and Italy.

Sorrounded by the sea from the very beginning of his life, Rafael continues his dialogue with its waters from inland, dreaming of the day in which he can spend his life repairing sails at any sea port whose name he couldn't remember.
